1) Falling of leaves suggests the process of death and human waste on a large scale. Explain with reference to the poem.
Ans:- The falling of leaves suggests the process of death. The way a leaf grows on a tree and falls down is similar to when humans are born, they grow, and at some point in time they die. While growing up the leaves suffers a lot. The leaves have to face the scorching sun, heavy downpours and weighty snow. It has to pass through these weathers repeatedly. Similarly, humans have to go through so many problems and pains in life while growing up. They have to go through problems, trust issues, heartbreaks, traumas, stress and depression etc. But after going through all of this both leaves and humans take their last breath and fall from the tree and life respectively.
2. The poet is critical of negative tendencies of the human society. What are these tendencies? Give details.
Ans:- W.H. Auden fearlessly describes the negative side of human society. As we humans live, we have to be aware of the obligations of human society. Human society is made of cast, creeds and religion. It created discrimination among humans and divided them into various hierarchies. Human society is the root cause of most of the problems and pains, which everyone has to suffer in his journey, in human life. In order to survive, a human must live with these rules and suffer. The more you want to survive the more you have to suffer because if you tend to outlaw these rules, you become unacceptable by human society, which means loneliness and more suffering.
3. Who are the ‘Strolls’ in the real world?
Ans:- According to Scandinavian mythology, Trolls are monstrous creatures who are hostile to human beings. These trolls love to see humans suffer. The poet legitimately compares these Trolls with human society. He says that human society’s rules are hostile to human beings as they make humans suffer. Human Society should make rules for the beneficiary or upliftment of humans but it tends to do the opposite. Just like starving Trolls feed on human dead bodies, the same way human society is slowly eating up humans by not giving them freedom.
4. Though the poet refers to ‘death’ several times, yet the poem is not a pessimistic on one. Justify your answer.
Ans:- The poet, W. H. Auden compares the autumn tree, with no leaves, to an old person. For, they both describe suffering and illness. In an optimistic tone, the poet says that an old person has to suffer a lot of pain, the older he gets the more pain he gets. The only best way to end this suffering or pain is their last distress, i.e., their death. It is the cycle of life. Everything that was born has to die someday. We are mortal beings. The more we grow up, the more problems we have to face, for life is easy for none. Diseases, problems, society, everything goes against us. Therefore, the poet says, in order to end the suffering of a human being, a human has to end.

The title ‘if winter comes, can spring be far behind’, is an extract from a very famous proverb, ‘O wind, if winter comes, can spring be far behind’ given by a versatile poet and writer, Percy Bysshe Shelley. This proverb means to say that if winter, which denotes problems and suffering, comes into life, will spring, which denotes joy and happy days, come or not? I will support the answer in an optimistic way. So, yes, good days will come too. Both good and bad are parts of our life. When the night passes the darkness vanishes and we see the sun and the morning daylight comes. If the darkness won’t come then the day will also not rise.
This is the cycle of life. Every day, every creature has to go through the cycle of morning and night. Both things are dependent on each other, just like seasons. Both Winter and Spring are dependent on each other. When we learn to fight with our problems then we are rewarded with good days. Therefore, one should never doubt the arrival of good days in bad times and never think that good times will always remain and they never have to face any problems.
b) Let us make this world a better place to live in.
There are various ways in which we can make this world a better place to live in. The foremost step to make this world liveable is to be a good society. We should not judge others, we should not discriminate by any means be it caste, creed or religion. Another way we can make this world liveable is to be kind, generous, honest and compassionate to others. We should be helpful towards others. Whatever knowledge we have, we should furnish it, brush it and share it with those who are in need. We should appreciate other’s hard work and we should never criticise others work or personality. We should admire other people who have done something very noticeable work or work related to the upliftment of our society or world.
Lastly, we should not feel jealous of others or never curse others and never compare ourselves to others. After inculcating these small changes in our life we can not only change ourselves but also others. And if everyone does the same, the world will become a very beautiful and better place to live in. Society will not be causing stress to anyone anymore.
