NCERT Solutions For Class 9 English Moments Chapter 9 । The Beggar Question Answer

Think about it (Page 67)

1. Has Lushkoff become a beggar by circumstance or by choice?

Ans:- It seemed like Lushkoff had become a beggar due by choice because although he was fired from his job of being a Russian choir singer he himself was the reason behind this, to be exact it was his bad drinking habit that lead to his downfall and instead of searching for a new job while leaving his drinking habits he started begging.

2. What reasons does he give to Sergei for his telling lies?

Ans:- He told Sergei that he had no other choice but to lie as he was fired from his job of being a Russian choir singer due to his bad drinking habit and nobody was willing to give him anything if he didn’t lie about himself.

3. Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei?

Ans:- Lushkoff was not a very enthusiastic or cooperative worker and he even slacked off many times in front of his seniors. Lushkoff seemed to be ashamed and didn’t want to hurt his pride any further than it already had been as he himself mentioned that he would work and earn his bread that is if anyone would give him any work.

4. Sergei says, “I am happy that my words have taken effect”. Why does he say so? Is he right in saying so?

Ans:- When Sergei was moving from his curry house to another he hired Lushkoff for packaging and lifting purposes although all he did was tag along with the workers there was one big improvement that Sergei noticed and that was that Lushkoff was not drunk which was a great sight for Sergie and he was proud of his step towards Lushkoff, that was why Sergei said: “I am happy that my words have taken effect.” At the end of the story we find out, it was not actually Sergei’s act of mercy and pity that had helped Lushkoff but Olga’s continuous nagging and sympathetic cry that had led Lushkoff to where he was.

5. Lushkoff is earning thirty five roubles a month. How is he obliged to Sergei for this?

Ans:- In a way, Sergei’s saving and providing a job to the pitiful Lushkoff lead him to his achievements. If it hadn’t been for Sergei’s kind wish to get Lushkoff to do a job and make him find his right part Lushkoff wouldn’t have faced Olga’s nagging and sympathetic wailing and he also wouldn’t have faced humiliation from other employees which in the end did push him to leave his bad drinking habit and work as a reputable person making him successful.

6. During their conversation Lushkoff reveals that Sergei’s cook, Olga, is responsible for the positive change in him. How has Olga saved Lushkoff?

Ans:- Olga’s been kind and torturous at the same time for Lushkoff, according to his explanation, it was never Lushkoff who cut the woods as the task was already deemed impossible for the weak and fumbling guy so, it was Olga who did it for him every time and then when he did other chores she would often give him a sympathetic cry as well, there was no actual explanation or to be specific, even Lushkoff didn’t know what made him choose the right part but what he did know was that Olga has a big hand in all of it.

1. How can we help beggars/abolish begging?

Ans:- Helping beggars is a really kind and generous thing for one to do. If one wants to help a beggar there are many ways one can do so, for starters, one can provide the beggar with food whenever one can or even give them the leftovers as it would be a blessing in disguise for them and as the text, one can also help beggars in finding jobs through their connections which would give them a consistent source of income making them lead a much better and peaceful life. There are also many NGOs for people who can’t work or have disabilities so one can take these types of beggars to these NGOs as mostly the beggars don’t even know that there are such organizations willing to help them and provide for them.
