1. Why is Mrs Pumphrey worried about Tricki?

Ans:- Mrs. Pamphrey was greatly worried and anxious about the fattening constitution of her pet, Tricki. Tricki’s eyes had turned red and rheumy, he was staring blankly towards a single direction and his tongue was rolling out which did not seem to be good signs according to the doctor.

2. What does she do to help him? Is she wise in this?

Ans:- Mrs. Pamphrey became anxious after seeing the weakened state Tricki was in so she, without consulting Tricki’s doctor, started giving more food than she regularly does to Tricki, while making her own conclusion that Tricki was suffering from malnutrition. She gave her extra food containing high calories in hopes of fattening Tricki.

It didn’t seem like she should have done that as dogs need exercise and a limited amount of food should’ve been provided to Tricki in order for him to stay fit. And I believe that too much of anything can be disastrous whether it be healthy or not for one’s health.

3. Who does ‘I’ refer to in this story?

Ans:- ‘I’ is referred to Mr. Herriot, Tricki’s doctor.

Read And Find Out (Page 3)

1. Is the narrator as rich as Tricki’s mistress?

Ans:- No, it doesn’t seem like the narrator is as rich as Tricki’s mistress, because a rich person would never take something that belonged or given to someone else and think of something as menial as eggs as a luxury.

2. How does he treat the dog?

Ans:- He left Tricki with the rest of the household dogs and observed him while Tricki got to get his fair share of exercise and have fun as well by being a part of the pack. He gave Tricki only water for a few days until he got himself to move and whine to go out and join the other dogs and then he was given a proper 3-time meal served with all the other dogs.

3. Why is he tempted to keep Tricki on as a permanent guest?

Ans:- Mrs. Pumphrey started bringing two dozen eggs to build up Tricki’s strength, on a daily basis then wine to enrich Tricki’s blood, and then brandy. It was not suitable for Tricki to have any of them that’s why Mrs. Harriet and his partners started to have the eggs at breakfast and also consumed the wine and brandy as Mrs. Pamphrey was not ready to have a no for an answer.

4. Why does Mrs Pumphrey think the dog’s recovery is ‘a triumph of surgery’?

Ans:- Mrs. Pumphrey thought that the change in Tricki’s constitution was due to surgery, as Mr. Harriet was a veterinarian surgeon, therefore, she used the phrase “a triumph of surgery”, even though that wasn’t the truth.

Think About It (Page 6)
1. What kind of a person do you think the narrator, a veterinary surgeon, is? Would you say he is tactful as well as full of common sense?

Ans:- I think that the narrator was very good at his job and knew what the result would be if he left the dog with his mistress.

Tactful and full of common sense are two adjectives that fit him perfectly, even though his expertise wasn’t necessary for the situation with Tricki he took the initiative and also made full use of his patient’s guardian which was definitely hum being tactful.

2. Do you think Tricki was happy to go home? What do you think will happen now?

Ans:- Tricki’s reaction towards Mrs. Pumphrey indicated his happiness towards going back home as well.

There is the possibility of one of two things happening, firstly, the history would repeat itself, Mrs. Pumphrey wouldn’t be able to hold herself back and feed Tricki more than needed while not giving him proper exercise and end up bringing Tricki back to Mr Harriet. Secondly, Mrs. Pumphrey would hold herself back in feeding Tricki and providing him with proper exercise daily.

The former is likely to happen as she didn’t know how Tricki actually recovered and the reasons behind his illness.

3. Do you think it is a real-life episode or mere fiction? Or is it a mixture of both?

Ans:- I think this is a mixture of both as it isn’t uncommon to have such a pet guardian but it just didn’t look real when they mentioned all the food and wine.

Talk About It (Page 7)

1. This episode describes the silly behaviour of a rich woman who is foolishly indulgent, perhaps because she is lonely. Do you think such people are merely silly or can their actions cause harm to others?

Ans:- I think that these types of people are not merely silly but also can cause harm to others with their actions. She seemed to have been obsessed with her dog and her dog’s well-being and if any mishappen would have occurred I don’t think she would have left the doctor alone.

2. Do you think there are also parents like Mrs Pumphrey?

Ans:- I think that there may be parents like Mrs. Pumphrey as it isn’t something wrong, it’s just a part of their nature and their way of expressing their love for their child.

3. What would you have done if you were:
  • a member of the staff in Mrs Pumphrey’s household,
  • a neighbour? What would your life have been like, in general?

Ans:- If I would have been

i) a member of the staff in Mrs. Pumphrey’s household, then I would have taken Tricki for exercise on a daily basis and advised Mrs. Pumphrey to contain the amount of food she provides Tricki with,

ii) a neighbour, then also I would have done the same, giving her my advice and asking her to let me take the dog for walks if she’s too busy to do so.

4. What would you have done if you were in the narrator’s place?

Ans:- If I had been at the narrator’s place then I would do the same things that he did as well but I also would’ve given Mrs. Pumphrey a strict lecture on what to do and what not to do when having a pet at home and also explained her about the procedure through which Tricki got recovered while highlighting her mistakes as well.
