1.) What are Hari Singh’s reactions to the prospect of receiving an education? Do they change over time? (Hint: Compare, for example, the thought: “I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve” with these later thoughts: “Whole sentences, I knew, could one day bring me more than a few hundred rupees. It was a simple matter to steal — and sometimes just as simple to be caught. But to be a really big man, a clever and respected man, was something else.”) What makes him return to Anil?

Ans- Hari Singh was happy and hoping for a future of being respected in society, which he never even dreamt of when he was a thief. If we compare these thoughts: “I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve” with these later thoughts: “Whole sentences, I knew, could one day bring me more than a few hundred rupees. It was a simple matter to steal — and sometimes just as simple to be caught. But to be a really big man, a clever and respected man, was something else.” we get to know that he didn’t change his thoughts over time. In the end, he chose the right path i.e. to return to Anil, due to the same thoughts and hopes of becoming someone smart and respectful in the future to come.

2.) Why does not Anil hand the thief over to the police? Do you think most people would have done so? In what ways is Anil different from such employers?

Ans- I think Anil was happy and satisfied that the thief he trusted on, did not betray him and relieved that, wavering as it may, the thief had taken a step towards the achievement of his bright future. I don’t think there are any more righteous people left in this world, at least not to the extent that Anil was, as anybody would have handed the thief over to the police at the moment they came to know about the theft. Not only did Anil let Hari’s theft slide but also gave Hari, a fifty-rupee note while assuring him about his permanent wages for his work which was not something any employer nowadays can do even if they want to.

1.) Do you think people like Anil and Hari Singh are found only in fiction, or are there such people in real life?

Ans– There is no good thief or righteous employer in this generation so I think this is no more than fiction and cannot become real.

2.) Do you think it a significant detail in the story that Anil is a struggling writer? Does this explain his behaviour in any way?

Ans- Yes, it is a significant detail that Anil is a struggling writer. It does explain his behavior in the beginning, when he hesitates to keep the thief under his roof, and also when he denies Hari any sort of payment for his work. Although his behavior, in the end, seems surreal to even imagine and does not seem to relate to him being a struggling writer in any way.

3.) Have you met anyone like Hari Singh? Can you think and imagine the circumstances that can turn a fifteen-year-old boy into a thief?

Ans- No, I’ve not met anyone like Hari Singh.

It’s actually pretty easy to imagine the circumstances that can turn a fifteen-year-old boy into a thief as it all starts with not having 3 basic necessities which a human being needs to survive – food, shelter, and clothing. A kid not more than fifteen lost his parents, has nobody to depend on, and nothing that can be called his own. Starving from not having eaten anything for days, cloth old and torn which make them feel freezing cold in winter but melting hot in summer and nowhere to stay or call home can only leads him to only two choices – beg for some food to live or steal from strangers to survive. In this situation, stealing does sound like the best option even though it’s wrong.

4.) Where is the story set? (You can get clues from the names of the persons and places mentioned in it.) Which language or languages are spoken in these places? Do you think the characters in the story spoke to each other in English?

Ans- I think the story is set in a rural city and the first scene is acted in front of a TV shop where TVs are kept for display purposes.

It seems that English is the language spoken in these places. Yes, I think the characters in the story spoke in English to each other.
