1.) Who are the characters in this poem? List them with their pet names.

Ans- The characters in the poem are Custard, the cowardly dragon, and his friends: Belinda, the little black kitten, Ink, the mouse with a monocle, Mustard, the oldest of the dogs, and Marmalade, the big, brave tomcat.

2.) Why did Custard cry for a nice safe cage? Why is the dragon called a “cowardly dragon”?

Ans- Custard cried for a nice safe cage because he was scared of the pirate who had come to the house. The dragon is called “cowardly” because he is afraid of danger and does not want to fight. He prefers to avoid danger and stay safe

3.) “Belinda tickled him, she tickled him unmerciful…” Why?

Ans- Belinda tickled Custard unmercifully to encourage him to be brave and face the pirate. She knew that Custard was capable of being brave and that he needed a little push to overcome his fear. The tickling was a way to motivate Custard to be brave and stand up for himself and his friends.
