1. Why was the young seagull afraid to fly? Do you think all young birds are afraid to make their first flight,or are some birds more timid than others? Do you think a human baby also finds it a challenge to take its first steps?

Ans:- Young Seagull was afraid to take his initial flight because of a lack of trust in himself and his wings. He would get injured while taking flight that fear penetrated and preoccupied his mind. His younger siblings were flying fearlessly regardless of their short wings. No, all young are not afraid to make their first flight but some birds are frightened to take the initial flight.

Yes, a Human baby finds it challenging but slowly and gradually learns to crawl, stand and walk taking his first step.

2. ”The sight of the food maddened him”. What does this suggest?” What compelled the young seagull to finally fly?”

Ans:- Young Seagull was unable to fly that day and was left in isolation by other members. He was hungry and was looking forward with hope that his mother would offer him food. She saw Young Seagull approach towards him but stopped at a certain distance from him. She threw the piece of fish in the air and Young Seagull maddened due to hunger hopped in that direction to hold catch during this he noticed his wings were flapping in the air. this way he took his first flight.

3. ”They were beckoning to him, calling shrilly.” Why did the Seagull’s father and mother threaten him and cajole him to fly?

Ans:- The young seagull was frightened to fly because of this reason they were beckoning him and calling him shrilly. He was hungry and was threatened for a reason if he still didn’t fly would die due to starvation. He was cajoled by a piece of fish by his mother to make him fly.

4. Have you ever had a similar experience where your parents encouraged you to do something that you were too scared to try? Discuss this in pairs or groups.

Ans:- Yes, I had a similar experience too. I was scared to take part in a competition but my parents motivated me to take part in the competition as well as they provided me during the competition. I had secured one of the places as the winner.

5. In case of a bird flying. It seems natural act , and foregone conclusion that it should succeed. In the examples you have given in the answer to the previous question was your success guaranteed, or was it important for you to try, regardless of a possibility as a failure?

Ans:- In case of bird flying. It seems a natural act, and a foregone conclusion that it should succeed. In the examples, I have answered of previous question regarding participating in a competition. Success is not guaranteed but the essential and foremost step is to try regardless of the possibility of a failure.

Write a short composition on your initial attempts at learning a skill. You could describe the challenges of learning to ride a bicycle or learning to swim. Make it as humorous as possible.

Ans:- While learning a skill or any particular skill everyone faces challenges. The challenges of learning to ride a bicycle involve fear to knocked down from the bicycle and getting injured even before trying. Practice is required for riding a bicycle and until you learn to trust yourself that you can ride you require someone to support holding the bicycle from behind. Even if you fall and get hurt, if you are willing to learn the bicycle that will motivate you to start from where you left.

II.The Black Aeroplane

1. “I’ll take the risk.”What is the risk? Why does the narrator take it?

Ans:- The narrator of the story is a pilot who is willing to reach Paris to spend the holidays and have breakfast with his family. During his journey, he encounters black clouds that submerge the plane within it and with a possibility of the upcoming storm. He took risks to move forward to reach the destination.

2. Describe the narrator’s experience as he flew the aeroplane into the storm.

Ans:- The narrator took the risk of flying the aeroplane into the storm as the plane was surrounded by black clouds which led to a dim view. Instruments were malfunctioning and the plane was almost out of fuel. He spotted another plane and followed it and this plane made a path to rescue the narrator.

3. Why does the narrator say ,”I landed and was not sorry to walk away from the old dakota….?

Ans:- The narrator was directed by another plane that made him land safely. He was very glad as he landed and enquired about the other plane but was left amazed by the response that there was no other plane besides his plane. He was not sorry for walking off the old plane this was the reason the narrator said this line.

4. What made the women in the control centre look at the narrator strangely?

Ans:- The women in the control centre looked at the narrator strangely as he enquired about an aeroplane that guided him through the black clouds. He wanted to express his gratitude to the other pilot who saved him from this life-threatening situation.

5. Who do you think helped the narrator to reach safely? Discuss this among yourselves and give reason for your answer.

Ans:- As there was no other plane discovered in the sky after an investigation at the control centre. The pilot was guided by himself in this situation, he might have led towards resolving obstacles to reach the destination.

Thinking About Language

1. Study the sentences given below.

(a)They looked like black mountains.
(b)Inside the clouds near me, everything was suddenly black.
(c)In the black clouds near me,I saw another aeroplane.
(d)The strange black aeroplane was there.

The word ‘black’ in the sentence (a) and (c) refers to the very darkest colour. But in (b) and (d)(here) it means without light/with no light.

‘Black’ has a variety of meanings in the different contexts.

For Example:

(a) ‘I prefer Black tea’ means’ I prefer tea without milk’.

(b)  ‘With increasing pollution the future of the world is black’ means ‘ With increasing pollution the future of the world is very depressing/without hope.’

Now , try to guess the meaning of the word ‘Black’ in the sentences given below. Check the meanings in the dictionary and find out whether you have guessed right.

Ans:- The meaning of Black in this sentence means hands and face are dark and dusty.

Ans:- The meaning of the Black in the sentence means dark and destressing comedy.

Ans:- The meaning of black in this sentence means to sell those goods at higher prices later.

Ans:- The meaning of black in the sentence means Beaten badly and bruised.

Ans:- Yes, I have been alone during a thunderstorm. It was raining heavily and I was sitting in my room. Due to thunderstorm lighting struck at some places. I was frightened by the sound of lightning and it was all dark because of a power cut. It was getting difficult to perform any task. Areas were waterlogged as a result of rain. It was declared a half day of the school.
