Answer: The enjoyable rain changed into hailstorms. The flowers and leaves were gone. These hailstorms destroyed the crop of Lencho’s field.

Question 4. What were Lencho’s feelings when the hail stopped?

Answer: When the hail stopped, Lencho became upset because all of his crops were destroyed. All his labor was of no use. He was worried thinking about what he will feed his family next year. He could foresee a gloomy future for him and his family.

Question 5. Who or what did Lencho have faith in? What did he do?

Answer: Lencho had a deep faith in God. So, he wrote a letter to God to help him with his situation. He was asking for a hundred pesos to sow his field again and to sustain his family until the next harvest.

Question 6. Who reads the letter?

Answer: The postmaster reads the letter and then shows it to the postmaster.

Question 7. What did the postmaster do after reading a letter?

Answer: After reading Lencho’s letter the postmaster laughed but soon he turned serious. He admired the faith of Lencho’s in God, so he came up with a plan to collect money. He asked for money from his fellow employees , put a part of his salary and his friends also contributed as charity. Then he send the money to Lencho on behalf of God.

Question 8. Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it?

Answer: No, Lencho was not surprised to find a letter for him with money in it as he had a great faith in God.

Question 9. What made Lencho angry?

Answer: The number of pesos was less than which he had requested. Therefore, he was angry.

Thinking about the Text

Question 1. Who does Lencho have complete faith in? Which sentences in the story tell you this?

Answer: Lencho has complete faith in God. The following sentence from the story tell us about this:

• “God”, he wrote, “if you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year”.
• He wrote ‘To God’ on the envelope, put the letter inside and still troubled, went to town.
• Lencho showed not the slightest surprise on seeing the money; such was his confidence.
• God could not have made a mistake, nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested.

Question 2. Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter God?

Answer: The postmaker sends money to Lencho because he was impressed by his faith in God. He does not want to shake his faith. He collected money from various sources and sent them to Lenchan. He signed the letter on behalf of God so Lencho’s faith in God remains alive.

Question 3. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why or why not?

Answer: Lencho did not try to find out who had sent the money to him. This is because his faith in God was firm. He believed that God would respond to his request and provide him the money he needed.

Question 4. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected).

Answer: Lencho thinks the post office employees have taken the rest of the money. The irony in the situation is that the post office employees are the ones who collected money and sent it to him and even called them ‘bunch of crooks’.

Question 5. Are there people like Lencho in the real world? What kind of a person would you say he is? You may select appropriate words from the box to answer the question.

Answer: Yes, it is possible that there are people like Lencho in the real world. He had a deep and unquestionable faith in God. He was not selfish or greedy but simply naive.

Question 6. There are two kinds of conflict in the story between humans and nature and between humans themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated?

Answer: After reading the story, we can say there are two types of conflict between humans and nature and between humans themselves. These conflicts are illustrated in the following points:

Conflict between Humans and Nature: This conflict can better be illustrated when rain turned into a hailstorm and destroyed Lencho’s whole crops.

Conflict between Humans and Humans: This conflict can be illustrated by the time when post office employees sent money to Lencho and he felt that he got fewer pesos because they stole it and called them a ‘ bunch of crooks ‘.
