1. Why do the courtiers call the prince ‘the Happy Prince’? Is he really happy? What does he see all around him?
Ans:- The prince was happy throughout his life including the moment of his death therefore he was referred to as ‘the happy prince’ by courtiers. He sees the misery of the men and women of his city which he couldn’t see when he was a prince and was being sheltered his entire life from the world around him or from the world outside the palace.
2. Why does the Happy Prince send a ruby for the seamstress? What does the swallow do in the seamstress’ house?
Ans:- The seamstress was tired and didn’t have the capacity to continue her work while also seeing his child suffering from a severe fever and was also hungry but the seamstress didn’t have anything but water to give him, the happy prince wanted to send her a Ruby so that she would be able to feed her son and treat his illness as well. The seamstress was sleeping while the swallow put the Ruby near her and went to the boy, who was tossing in his sleep, flapped his wings over the boy which gave him a cool and soothing breeze leading him to sleep peacefully.
3. For whom does the prince send the sapphires and why?
Ans:- He sent the sapphire to the theatre playwright as he was freezing from the cold breeze and didn’t have wood to burn in order to escape the winter and continue his work so, the prince wanted him to sell the sapphire and buy wood for himself and wrap himself in the warmth of the fire.
4. What does the swallow see when it was flying over the city?
Ans:- Swallow saw the rich people enjoying their luxuries while the poor, including children, lying on the streets with nowhere to go and with there being no medium through which they could escape the harsh winter, not only that, but he also saw the watchmen not allowing the poor children to stay at the streets.
5. Why did the swallow not leave the prince and go to Egypt?
Ans:- Firstly, it was due to the prince’s pitiful requests that the swallow couldn’t deny and which lead it to stay. But then when the prince was satisfied and asked the swallow to leave, it couldn’t as he was too kind to leave the prince alone and even more so when the prince had lost both his eyes while helping others. This was the reason why the swallow didn’t leave for Egypt even though that was its prior plan.
6. What are the precious things mentioned in the story? Why are they precious?
Ans:- There were two precious things that were mentioned in the story, firstly the broken lead heart and secondly, the dead swallow.
The lead heart of the prince was beating only to serve and help others and got broken due to the loss of his dearest friend, the swallow. The kind and selfless swallow who sacrificed himself to serve others and stay with his dearest friend during his hours of misery. This was the reason behind those things being the most precious.
